 | Re: Povray Hi serviteur
You mean saving the POV-Ray image to a file? Just specifying the file in "Output options" does not work by default.
Reason: POV-Ray has a special file I/O security feature, it's enabled by default e.g. in the Ubuntu release.
Suggested solution: sudo gedit /etc/povray/3.6/povray.conf (replace 3.6 by your povray version). Change the file I/O security from "restricted" to "none".
[File I/O Security] none ; all read and write operations on files are allowed. ;read-only ; uses the "read+write" directories for writing (see below). ;restricted ; uses _only_ "read" and "read+write" directories for file I/O.

 | Re: Povray Hi Luca Basically I agree, however, what's the point in having additional read/write restrictions for a particular program? Shouldn't the normal read/write permissions in the filesystem be enough? Povray is not a "dangerous" application in my eyes (as would be a webserver, for instance) I run cycas as a normal user in Linux. |

 | Re: Povray Yes, you are right, sometimes dangers are overestimated, especially on linux systems that basically are safe enough, but the fact is that our computers are not stand alone anymore, and even if an app is safe by itself, there should be many other messes around that can bring to ie a local root compromise so at that point you don't know what's going on anymore. Rise the hand who didd'nt left behind a trapdoor somewere around, faking an unsuspected app. So anyone can adopt his security polices given his boundary conditions as, you know, security is a compromise, but first of all he has to know that there is a potential security risk. ciao luca
