 | Error cannot open local settings It seems there is something I missed on the move to Cycas 3.9. And I think it was not well explained (and the Readme files are not updated). When I updated Cycas to 3.9, on my Ubuntu, I didn't notice changes. Then I made a new fresh install of Ubuntu 8.10 on my computer. I lost my own symbols by the way because after so much time, I did'nt remember where they where saved... That's my fault anyway. But now Cycas give me this error message, so I started to look around, and saw that now Cycas is in /opt/ and not anymore in /usr/... The defaultsprefs are there too, and I had too change the file permissions to be able to save my settings, but it still not working. I must everytime I launch Cycas change the settings for the paths for it to see the sym.
Any workaround to make this easier to fix and simple to understand ?
Thanks

 | Re: Error cannot open local settings I will give more thought to your cycas/ubuntu problem. Stupid question: when you change your paths in settings, do they save corrrectly? Maybe when cycas opens it is reading another default prefs somewhere else? Just ideas.
BTW I love your blender tutorials on your site. Especially the "soft bodies". Blender is great for creating those mathematical forms. I will work through that soon. And your animations are just great! Hey, you are a master of blender! |

 | Re: Error cannot open local settings Hi viralata, I've had the same problem under SuSE. I solved this when I did:
create the path /home/<user>/CYCAS3/prefs copy the file default.prefs from for example from root make a chown to the actual user start cycas and edit my preferences local
After this it works fine.

 | Re: Error cannot open local settings Thanks to both of you for answering. Johannes you saved me, My file Defaultpref wasn't in a folder prefs, that was only the problem. Now working. My website: http://matthieudupontarchi.free.fr Some of my blender images: http://matthieu3d.free.fr |

 | Re: Error cannot open local settings Thanks, helped me too! To the developers: 1) Maybe Cycas could also look for default.prefs in the hidden dir ~/.CYCAS3 (in addition to ~/CYCAS3). May be more usual, and some users don't like software-specific folders in their ~. 2) If a user's settings directory doesn't exist, e.g. when Cycas was installed using sudo, settings can't be saved. It may be nice to be asked "No settings folder found, do you want to create one?" |
