I recommend you to make 3D draws. After it´s usual for you, you´ll prefer that over 2D. People lives in a 3D world.

I`ve imported and exported dxf and 3ds files without problem (running OpenSuse 10.33 and 11.0). Try it again or tell us more about the question.

You need Cycas Pro in order to import *.dxf files.

I had that problem once or twice in OpenSuse 10.3 and 11.0. Try uninstall and install it again.
